The monastery of St. John the Divine materialized because of the vision and efforts of a single monastic figure of high erudition, determination and esteem, among the imperial and the patriarchal courts of Constantinople. The monastery was founded by St. Christodoulos in 1088 on the wasteland of Patmos, which was ceded in its entirety free of debt or future taxation. The first phase of the building programmed was carried out by monks especially trained in Constantinople, as well as bachelors from the surrounding islands. Travel to Patmos made easy!
